Kamaru Usman Has Options!!!

Kamaru Usman is the UFC Welterweight Champion and has nearly cleared out the welterweight division. In his recent bout, he dismantled Gilbert Burns, who was ranked second in the division. He dominated Burns with jabs that kept hitting right on the money. After the fight, Usman called out former opponent Jorge Masvidal, who Usman already defeated in five straight rounds. I understand Usman calling out Masvidal because of the popular demand for the fight, but I believe Usman will once again dominate Masvidal for another five rounds if they step into the octagon. With that being said, Usman has defeated six of the top ten ranked fighters in the welterweight division. What is next for him? Usman has so many options even after almost clearing out of his division.

Colby Covington is always a potential option because of their intense rivalry. Since his lost to Usman, he picked up a spectacular win over former champion Tyron Woodley and has redeemed himself for a rematch. Covington is currently sitting ranked first overall in the welterweight division and has called out Usman numerous times. Yet, it still might take Covington another win to get Usman’s attention. I believe Covington and Usman had the most intense fight of the welterweight division’s history and the two would provide a great bout.

Next for Usman can also be Stephan Thompson, even though he is ranked number five in the division. Thompson is one of the top ten guys Usman has not faced. If Stephen Thompson picks up another win, he is well deserving of a title shot. Thompson’s karate style of fighting can give Usman a very tough task because it is a very hard style to train for and mimic. Thompson also has great takedown defense and if Usman cannot take him down, he will be in for a long night.

Next is Leon Edwards who is ranked third and is a former opponent who lost to Usman back in 2015. Since his loss to Usman, Edwards is on a eight fight win streak and has an upcoming bout with ranked thirteenth overall Belal Muhammad. If Leon wins nine in a row, he should fight for the belt next, but due to his unpopularity it is very hard to sell his fights. UFC should be about the best fighting the best, but lately it is all about fame and popularity. Since his incident with Masvidal, he has been getting a lot heat for it. Even a win might not earn a bout with the champion because he is fighting a fighter ranked at thirteenth while he sits third overall. Also, due to his lack of activity in the cage and almost being out for two years, he might have a long way to go to be in contention.

We will have to wait and find out in the future.
I believe everyone else in the division are two to three fights away from a titled shot. Due to Usman’s savage tear through the division, he can also just sit on the sidelines and let the division figure itself out since there has not been a sign of a new contender. I don’t think the division is on hold, but I do think that everyone in the division should be fighting each other instead of looking for a title shot when no one is clearly deserving of one.

UFC 255: Battle Of The Flyweights

UFC 255 showcases amazing bouts for the men’s and women’s flyweight division. Starting with the men, Champion Deiveson Figueiredo took on Alex Perez, who is ranked number four. Figueiredo is the favorite in this bout due to finishing Joseph Benavidez in two fights with ease. I believe Figueiredo has more of a chance of winning by a knockout or submission, while Perez can win if it goes to decision. Figueiredo is also the biggest star among the flyweights, which is not saying much because there have been many instances of the division being cut due to lack of stars and competition, especially after Henry Cejudo left. I believe that is why this is a worthy pay per view bout because the UFC is trying to bring more recognition to the men’s flyweight division. Also, there is another men’s flyweight bout on the card with Brandon Moreno vs. Brandon Royval with the winner potentially being next in line for a title shot.

As of the women’s flyweight division, Valentina Shevchenko should be headlining the pay per view but due to her being the favorite by a landslide of -1400 odds. Shevchenko is so spectacular and levels ahead of her competition. With that being said, anything is possible, and Jennifer Maia can pull off an upset with all the doubters motivating her to come out on top. Also, another important flyweight bout with Cynthia Calvillo vs. Katlyn Chookagian. This fight will put the winner as a potential title contender for the near future. The other flyweight bout is Antonina Shevchenko vs. Ariane Lipski which will be their first time on a UFC Pay per view card. UFC 255 is doing a good job with bringing attention to the men’s and women’s flyweight division. Hopefully these spotlights will provide opportunities for future spots for the up incoming division.

What’s next for Chan Sung Jung?

Chan Sung Jung, better known as the “Korean Zombie”, recently was outclassed in his bout against Brian Ortega. It was quite a shock for many fighting fans as Jung was the betting favorite in this fight. After his loss, UFC announced that Ortega will be challenging Alexander Volkanovski for the featherweight title. Where does this leave The Korean Zombie?

At the age of 33 with an 0-1 record in title shots, as well as being dropped in the rankings to number 5, it begs to question what is left for Jung. A climb back to the top seems endless. Jung could weigh in the option of retiring and potentially be inducted to the UFC Hall of Fame, but it would be difficult not to see Jung inside the Octagon. It would at least take two or three wins for another future title shot. However, if Jung loses one more fight, his legacy could be tarnished. The love that I and UFC fans have for the Korean Zombie is tremendous and it would be saddening to see a decline. What would be a good bounce back fight though? The lightweight division is pretty stacked. Josh Emmet is the first choice that comes to mind, especially after his spectacular win over Shane Burgos. There are also rumors of a bout between Zabit Magomedsharipov and Yair Rodríguez, with the loser being a good matchup for Jung. As a big fan of the Korean Zombie, I hope he bounces back from this loss.

Quick breakdown of Alistair Overeem vs Augusto Sakai

Alistair Overeem is an absolute legend and has nothing else to prove in MMA, but he has an upcoming bout that can potentially put him in discussions for a title shot. In Overeem’s past five fights, he is 3-2 and ranked sixth in the UFC heavyweight promotion after coming off a big win against Walt Harris. I believe if he wins his fight against Augusto Sakai, he will be in the talks for a higher ranking opponent that would allow him to continue his path of domination in the heavyweight division. However, if Overeem loses his fight against Sakai, it could possibly be the last time we see Overeem step into the Octagon.

Sakai is on a six-fight win streak and is ranked ninth, but he has not faced the likes of Overeem. With a 15-1 record, Sakai has less to lose in this fight because he is much younger by a decade. Even if he loses, it will still be easy to get over it as Overeem is a proven top tier veteran. However, a win over Overeem will move him up three spots in the ranking and he will be sitting under the top five heavyweights in the world. If Sakai also beats a legend like Overeem, it will steer his career to stardom.

The fight will either pave the way for another run towards a title shot for Overeem or see him hang up the gloves. It can also be stardom for Sakai or just be a bump in the road that he must overcome. Stay tuned for future updates.

Jon Jones In The Heavyweight Mix

Jon Jones vacated his light heavyweight title to move up to heavyweight. He has been dominating the light heavyweight division for years and defended the title eleven times. Currently, he is tied with Demetrious Johnson for the most title defenses in UFC history. What does the heavyweight division have in store for Jon Jones? Many questions linger for what he will do in the meantime as Francis Ngannou is next in line for a title bout.

The heavyweight division has a lot to offer Jones. I believe the winner of the Derrick Lewis and Curtis Blaydes bout would be a great opponent for him. Jairzinho Rozenstruik came off of a great win against Junior Dos Santos and he would be a great competitor for Jones as well. The other option for Jones is Alistair Overeem. He is coming off a win and has experience in K-1 kickboxing that will create a great striking match against Jones.

Yet, Jones needs to get his feet wet in heavyweight before he aims for a title shot. He should consider a fighter who is in at least the top six of the rankings. I believe he only needs one win in the heavyweight division to get a title shot. We now just see what is in store for Jones and his future bout.

What’s Next For Poirier?

At UFC Fight Night, Austin Dustin Poirier won in spectacular fashion against Dan Hooker by unanimous decision. What’s next for Poirier? He is currently 31 and in his prime as he has fought in both the featherweight and lightweight division. Poirier had a chance at the championship belt against Khabib Nurmagomedov and lost. He still has a lot of options due to his win against Hooker  and can potentially wait for another title shot against either Justin Gaethje or Khabib Nurmagomedov after their fight. If Gaethje wins against Khabib, Poirier’s odds are slightly higher at taking the belt from him since Gaethje has a prior loss to Poirier. Poirier can also have a potential rematch with Khabib if he can defend his title against Gaethje.

Two other options that come to mind is Poirier and Connor McGregor having a rematch. Dustin stated he would rather wait for a Nurmagomedov rematch instead of McGregor. McGregor did not take what Poirier said with a grain of salt and instead went on a tirade through Twitter. He said Poirier would rather lose by being held down the whole time instead of a TKO. McGregor also stated that Poirier’s loss to Nurmagomedov was by being held down and choked out while Poirier lost to him by TKO. Poirier can jump to the defense and fight McGregor immediately, but waiting for the belt seems to be the better option. Even at his age, Poirier can also move up to 170 pounds as his next option and be a dominant boxer in that division. With age, it becomes harder to cut weight, but seeing Poirier at 170 pounds would be a treat. Poirier will be incredible to watch and there could be amazing matchups to make if he decides to make that jump.

The Joy of Fight Night 168

Fight Night 168 was an event that made you jump out of your seat with sentimental moments. Dan Hooker won by split decision, but it may have been a controversial victory since the fight took place in his hometown. Despite the potential scoring advantage, it seemed as though Paul Felder was the clear victor as he won three out of the five rounds. Since his face was damaged and his legs were swollen, these elements could have played a role in the judge’s scoring. Dan Hooker put on a spectacular fight in using his range as an advantage the whole fight, but he did get rocked a couple of times during the exhibition. Hooker achieved an amazing take down in the last round which really improved his score. Even with the astounding performance by the two competitors, what happened after the match shook the audience. Dan Hardy interviewed an emotional Felder as he stated, “That might be it for me”. The fans in Auckland roared with cheers after hearing the news. Felder then mentions his daughter and started to tear up as he began to take off his glove. With his career potentially concluding, Hooker comes in to raise Felder’s hand. For many that grew up watching him in their childhood, this moment touched the hearts of many who watched around the world. If Felder retires, he will go down as one of the greatest fighters to do it.

After this moment, Hardy goes up to interview Hooker and he called out Justin Gaethje for his next opponent. Gaethje has not fought since September of 2019 as he’s waiting for a shot at Conor McGregor. Hooker is going to be out for a while due to his war with Felder, which gives Gaetje time to decide if he wants to fight Hooker or hold off for more money with a fight against McGregor. UFC Fight Night 168 did not disappoint and gave a glimpse to future bouts in the UFC.

The Future For Jon Jones

UFC 247 might be Jon Jones biggest test against an undefeated Dominick Reyes, who has a total of 12 straight wins. If Reyes pulls off one of the biggest upsets in UFC history by dethroning the king of the light heavyweight division there would be an instant rematch. If Reyes wins in a rematch he will be the next light heavyweight champ for many years to come. On the other hand, if Jones loses UFC 247 and wins in the rematch of course it will become a trilogy. However, what would happen if Jones gets in that cage of UFC 247 and demolishes Reyes?

What’s Next For Jon Jones?

What would be next for Jon Jones? Jones has already cleared out the light heavyweight division, except Dominick Reyes. If Jones runs through Reyes there would be nothing left in his division. Jones could retire and be considered the greatest light heavyweight, or he can risk his legacy and move up to the heavyweight division. If Jones moves up a weight class he would not have to deal with weight cutting. Could he be limiting his skill every time he cuts weight or is he best at his current weight? Jon can move up becoming weaker against his new larger opponents or he can be the same monster he is when he’s at light heavyweight. The heavyweight division top 10 is a very intimidating lineup. Would Jones have trouble transitioning or would he flourish? If Jones wins UFC 247 proceeding to move to heavyweight it will be a good test to see how he moves against newfound opponents like Derrick Lewis. Derrick Lewis is one of the top ten heavyweights also on the lineup for UFC 247. If Lewis wins his next fight he will be a great opponent for Jones to test the waters in the heavyweight division. If that were to happen it would be throwing Jones a bone. However, the UFC is more likely to throw Jones to the wolves and give him someone in the top three heavyweight division. Jones has already defeated Daniel Cormier so that would not be a fight to make. Curtis Blaydes, on the other hand, is ranked number 3 in the heavyweight division coming off an amazing win against JDS. This means Blaydes would be an opponent open for Jones if he decided to move up a class. Francis Ngannou can also be a great challenge for Jones, with Ngannou gaining strength with every match he faces. Ngannou has a difficult match coming up in March, meaning Jones VS Ngannou would have to be put on the backend for now. As great as a fight Jones against Stipe Miocic would be, the UFC would try to have Jones fight a top tier heavyweight candidate before he gets a chance at the heavyweight champion. UFC 247 will shed light on the future of Jon Jones
